THE CREATIVE GENE

I think everybody has it. I'm just not sure everybody knows what to do with it. The creative gene is inside all of us, but I believe that when its stimulated in some of us, it gives off a feeling that is unlike any other - kinda like having sex ....... but not!!! Hmmm ..... that sounds weird, so let me explain. When you have sex, it feels a certain way, and its almost impossible to recreate that feeling with anything else (trust me, I have tried most drug combinations, and while some are very ...... interesting, ..... none actually feel similar to having sex). I think the creative part of our brains is the same way, and I think that once we have stimulated it a few times, it becomes another feeling that we cant get any other way. What makes me pontificate like this?..... well, getting together with Billy and Ricky (and also having Brett send some riffs digitally from New York to work on) has stimulated me again. We went through a writing period last year that was great, and then we recorded the album. But then you move on to a different part of the job - might be gearing up to rehearse and play some shows, or it might be "hurry up and wait" with the whole record deal situation. Either way, its not the intense creative feeling. So getting back to basics and writing more songs with the guys has been really good for me. I feel inspired, I feel energized, I feel like I have something to say. Thats why I have always loved that part of making music. The business side of it all usually ruins most of that feeling, but as I get older, I realize that I dont really care!! I like touring, I like doing press, I like being a part of all of that stuff. But the thing I like the most is actually creating something from nothing, and then listening back to it when its done. The creative gene. Mine is making a big mess on the sheets at the moment!!!

Peebs (and everyone else asking about Miami) - I honestly dont know if its a public show or not. I'll find out soon and let you know. Chances are though, that its not going to be. Let me find out.

Muse (and everyone else asking about Circus Diablo dates) - We are currently waiting to finish a deal with a company. We will not be playing until all that is locked in. Once we have a release date for the record, we will schedule our touring around that.

Kelly - My most prized possession? Either my signed Jamie Reid Sex Pistols artwork thats framed in my living room (see the VERY posed pic to the left!!!), or my Seditionaries parachute shirt. Or I could get existential on yer ass and say ..... "My memories" ......

Linda - Vive Le Rock was one of my favorite Seditionaries tee shirt designs. It is also one of my many internet identities ...... sometimes its better than broadcasting BILLY MORRISON, if you know what I mean.

Paul - Nope. Have not seen Body Shots. Any good?

Max - Although the radio station does have some archived CFR shows, and I have a bunch on CD somewhere, I just dont have time to digitize them, and put em up on the site. One day, I'll get it done.

Ylais - No I havent read it. In fact I dont even own it. I really should go get that one, right?

OK - I am off to the gym, and then its another afternoon of tickling the creative G spot. Oh, I could SO get carried away with that analogy, but I believe I have played it out already. The top picture today is from Billboard magazine. Nice little piece about Camp Freddy and a good pic of Terri Nunn messing about with me onstage. See you guys.

Peace

Billy

Thanks Billy! PLEASE let us know as soon as you know. I'm trying to hold down my Canadian concert traveling buddy from BOOKING the entire trip! He's so hot to go! Because if we can, we are GOING!
(besides it's always a good excuse to go to Miami and eat at Joe's ;-))

I meant to ask you, since quitting smoking have you gained any weight? You don't look like you did. Plus you haven't spoken about pilates classes recently. Are you still doing them?

Billy, I haven't read Adam's book yet either. I've ordered it and it should be here soon. I read the installments of his story in the newspaper here. Based on that, it should be fascinating and revealing.

I love the t-shirt pic in this blog entry. looking good.

Billy,

Have you went out to make a snow angel in your yard yet? Welcome to Missouri weather. It was actually 1.4 degrees one morning this week. YUK! Hope you get back to your So.Cali weather soon. I am not so envious of LA weather at the moment. Take care. Niki

Billy,

Completely agree with you on the creative gene.

There's something about that moment of inspiration that sets you into motion... a current that starts within... sometimes taking you in the direction you had anticipated, sometimes veering completely off-course into new territory.

There's nothing like it.

Hey Billy, you're right... nothing feels better than sex and creating. Do you find that EVERYTHING inspires you? As a musician and artist artist I reckon nothing goes un-noticed. What u think?

great comments about the creative muse. question..does "it" try to "come out" but can't? like you know there's an unexpressed song there but it won't come out the way you hear it in your head? ever have that happen?

Strange thing,I kept reading about a Jane's Addiction song called 'not an addict' I couldn't find it anywhere, it wasn't on any albums?! So I DL it, the opening even sounds like Perry, but it turns out it's a song by a band from Belgium called K's choice and it's a really beautiful song, great lyrics too.

Maybe this is the new way to get your music heard, label your songs something like 'Guns N Roses rarest live track ever.feat kurt Cobain on flute' tons of people will DL it and there ya go if they like it you have a new fan!

Maybe I'll start my own blog on Billy's site haha!

Great CFR! Loved your commentary on Morrisey.

Creativity..art..is it like sex, or like giving birth? (Hey well one comes before the other.)
Do men tend to look at it as having sex, and women look at it more as giving birth? Billy, you've set off all these ideas in my head!
Supposedly Socrates viewed himself as a 'midwife' to young men in helping them bringing their own ideas into fruition. But then supposedly his mother was a midwife for real.
For me, art is quite a lonely past time, or act.
I love brainstorming with people, in person. I miss that.
Hugs

Matt, what big, sexy balls you have! "We should do some more current songs" in Camp Freddy. That's hot.

Hi Billy,
Wicked post.
And then there's the question whether or not we would all be as creative as we are without the drug experiences. Isn't it mainly creative types that tend to experiment with drugs - so, if that's true (imho tends to be - me and my friends included) what I wanna know is would we all be as creative as we are without that added chemical change to the brain or is it an imbalance that prompts the attraction to drugs in the first place...
And then drugs destroy everything including creativity, ie a little may have been thought to help at first then the (sometimes) ensuing addiction definitely doesn't...
Did you really go about experimenting with drugs to find a high that would take you to where sex or creativity blasts you? Wow, well at least you had a purpose. For me it was sheer hell bent FUN seeking, running at full speed, running out of control, hedonism at it's purest, mayhem, chaos and colour - also known as a great blast of self destruction.
I find my creative gene so much purer these days. My writing is more coherent, tighter and clearer without the chemicals. Still haven't got a book deal though and it pisses me off so much as I finally sat down and wrote two proper novels last year. Admittedly only have about a dozen rejections so far but I hate rejection and I don't enjoy this part one bit!!
SORRY totally went off on one.
Do you have any little rituals (cute things) that you feel you absolutely gotta do before you go on stage?
All love
X
