THE POWER OF MUSIC

So how’s everyone doing this fine Monday morning? Or Monday evening if you are in the UK. Or Thursday lunchtime if you live in Outer Mongolia!! It’s a trippy thing, that whole time difference shit. And it gets brought home when we are doing CFR every week. Callers from the UK, from Canada, from Australia …. All listening on the world wide web. Makes me smile. Makes me actually believe that we can make a difference, however small. Also makes me realize that music is a personal thing, and that there are so many people out there just searching for a fix – the next song that takes them to that place. The place we all know and love, and miss so much. Remember the first time you heard that one sound, that one band or singer, that changed everything for you? Remember the first time you heard Guns And Roses? Or Janes Addiction? Or for me, the Sex Pistols? Whoever it was, we all had that one defining moment that made us realize what music could do to us, where it could take us, and how high we felt listening to it.

Conversely, we battle against contrived, manufactured, empty music. Constantly fed a stream of emotionless rubbish, we are forced to look deeper for the sounds that really move us. And sometimes it’s a long and fruitless search. We need to remember that what moves one person leaves another one cold. Its an intensely personal thing – when I was having my world changed forever listening to God Save The Queen, most of the UK was left staring nonplussed at the radio wondering what was going on. My point? Well, my point is this – keep looking. There is still amazing, well crafted, emotion filled music out there, and its up to you to find it. Don’t sit back and listen to your old ACDC album, content that it will always work for you. It WILL always work, but music needs you to be out there finding more great bands, great songs, great shows. I have had similar experiences throughout my adult life, and its always fantastic ….. hear a song that feels right, has a great sentiment, with a beat that shakes my soul and guitars that fill the space. I get the album, and there are nine more tracks that do the same thing!! It renews my faith in music, in the fact that my day can really be made better by a song. I doubt there will ever be another time as intense as the first Pistols song (or your first Zeppelin, or Aerosmith, or Ozzy …. Or even Christina, if that’s your bag….) but keep searching, cos the power of music is pretty much unique in this universe, and I for one love that I get to listen to it, make it, and share it.

All questions will be answered midweek. I just wanted to ….er…..whats the word?…….pontificate!!!……. today. The podcast is up on the PODCASTS page, we move into organizing the Indie Wreck The Halls Xmas Show this week, and continue working on some Diablo details for early 2007. All that kind of stuff will be coming at you during the week. BUT - breaking news .....

I can tell you that the Christmas single from Camp Freddy - a cover of Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody - will be available exclusively on I-Tunes US, UK and Europe, on December 12th. The song features Scott and Donovan sharing the vocals in the verses, and the whole band on the choruses!! It was loads of fun to record, and was always one of the best christmas songs when I was a kid. I'm glad we decided to record it, and very glad that we managed to get it out and online as quickly as we did. So go ahead and download it on the 12th - at this rate, we'll be releasing the album track by track, over a period of about 18 months!!! Now wait a minute - there's an idea .........

Peace

Billy

Hilarious stuff Billy!

ps, but I like that it is still a niche show, albeit all around the world, for "us." l8r.

Brilliantly pontificated Billy!

Posted by: ylais at November 27, 2006 09:55 AM

Hey Billy, I was really pleased by the time you took to discuss the music industry in the latest Camp Freddy Radio - keep pushing Dave in that direction; I would really love to hear more about how the development of bands used to occur. Also, as I listen to the podcasts on iTunes, my biggest request would be that even 15 seconds of the songs you discuss before playing be included. Capiche? Thanks, DP

Wo Billy how....philosophical for a Monday afternoon!
Actually for me it was the first time I heard The Ramones. My whole life changed.

Have a great Monday Billy and everyone!

aw, for some reason this post really struck me today. thanks, it's nice to stop and think about these things sometimes. for me, it was breaking the girl by rhcp. after i heard that, everything broke loose.

circus diablo should come to nyc!!! it seems all my favorite bands right now only play in la. sooo not fair!

Posted by: alison at November 27, 2006 05:33 PM

great CFR show & great post. my moment was hush/deep purple - didn't know you could do that to an organ....(after the british invasion of course - yes I was THERE in Feb 64 for the beginning of the onslaught)
question: since music always cycles (now it's hip hop, then it was grunge or be-bop whatever), are you able to rely on that cyclic nature naturally without worrying about it?

Right on! Great blog entry.

I noticed that there are two Billy Morrison/MusiCares items up for auction on eBay:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=grammy+billy+morrison

Love the idea behind the Nixon watches:

"The leather used in this limited collection came from the jackets, pants and guitar straps of Alice Cooper, Chris Cornell, Steve Earle, Peter Frampton, Anthony Kiedis, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Morrison, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink, Steven Tyler, Scott Weiland, and other artists."

December 12th, noted logged!

Just found out from my buddy who is a location manager for films she's been asked to work the new Halloween film that is going to happen in my lil town (which of course hosted the original). And to be directed by Rob Zombie! I am so hanging out at the set!!! Bwahahhaha.

Posted by: Kate at November 27, 2006 09:33 PM

Kate...don't you think Billy should get a walk on role?!

Posted by: beth at November 27, 2006 10:01 PM

hi billy, what you said about music is so true... it is personal and not everyone will like everything. I'm constantly search for new music and until the internet it was very hard where I live. I must confess I have found so many great bands on myspace since I discovered that place a few years ago I would never have heard of.

Yay for CFR xmas, I know you said it'll be available in the US, do you know if that means Canada as well?

Posted by: tina at November 28, 2006 08:13 AM

Great thoughts - made me want to go listen to some new sounds. That's EXACTLY what I love about CFR and SRL - the undiluted mixture.
Have a wicked week all. Did you see Bond?!

Billy, when you left the UK why did you choose LA? Could you describe some of the main differences between your life in London and your life in California, did you have any difficulties adjusting, do you ever miss England? How do the people differ etc. I know I should go out there myself to check it out, I do plan to but I can't afford it right now.

*Rant*

CFR was immensly enjoyable, I learnt a lot about the music industry, but I think it's different here in England. It seems if you don't have a guitar, long hair and jeans that look like tights you wont go far. What was once the indie scene is now so mainstream it's going to implode with the amount of crappy 3 chord bands swarming the industry. It's become trendy, 'EMO'/'INDIE', everyone is listening to guitar based music and everyone is dressing like they're fav band. Don't get me wrong it's a good thing, certainly better than bloody UK garage! But the corps have seen the opportunity to make money and are just signing up every band around, result some trully awful music.

The thing I hate here in the UK, there are no bands that rock, you know what I mean. There are no proper bands anymore, charismatic mental frontman, awesome guitarist and hard hitting drummer. What happened to guitar solo's?!! There are no new Slash's..Navarro's..Morello's. You know big character guitarists, guys that inspire you to start playing. You play with these guys and you've got what I'm talking about, it's entertainment as much as it is music.

I was def born 10 years too late. I'm 20 now and wish that I was twenty 15 years ago to see bands like Jane's addiction, G N R's Nirvana and the Chili peppers at their peak. Bands these days are like Business men they know exactly what they have to do,how to act and what music to release to become huge. Bands these days don't take risks, they are very ambitious and are terrified that they'll mess things up somehow. Bands 20 years ago were crazy.... fights, drugs, girls and still hugely successful....it was Rock n Roll! Things have changed.

Ok rant over, I hope I made some sense.

Peace

Oh wow!! I am inputting this comment from my Playstation 3, staring at my television!! Now Morrison has even MORE technology to mess with!! OK - enough. I know it works. Gonna nip out and get a wireless keyboard for this, and then its off to Alice In Chains. YES.

Posted by: BILLY at November 28, 2006 05:12 PM

can anybody remember the movie "bright lights big city"???? that is slowly turning into my life!
billy do you run ur xbox on 720 or 1080 and will you be goin to see the new rocky movie?

Posted by: . at November 28, 2006 05:21 PM

I'm wondering will Diablo be playing out anywhere during NAMM? Or perhaps you'll be running around somewhere in town, nudge, nudge, wink, wink know what I mean? lol

The music thing. I love what you have to say in this blog!!! Music has kept me going when nothing else in life has. It is a major part of my life, like air or water. What I love about it is that it brings people together that wouldn't normally associate and that's a beautiful thing. You're right, music is a very personal issue, like beauty in the eye of the beholder. But when something moves you, it moves you! The supreme inspirer.

Billy, it's so cute when you post in here with us regular folk.
I knew I shoulda gone to AIC tonight.

Posted by: beth at November 28, 2006 09:57 PM

oooooooooooooh checking your site and playing Playstation 3? Now that's multi-tasking!
When AIC played NYC the first time they under estimated and played a venue too small so it sold out in 2 minutes presale about 3 minutes regular sale......came back and played a little bigger venue. Same thing. :(
