TUESDAY TALES
New York City - and right now it feels more like Bangkok, with the heat and the humidity!! I mean, it hits you like a slap in the face as you leave the air conditioned peace of the hotel room, and step out into the noisy, crowded, hot streets of Manhattan. I walked down to Times Square from 55th (about 14 blocks) yesterday and by the time I got back to the hotel, I was dripping with sweat. What on earth would have me do such a thing? Nike Dunks of course! I picked up a couple of pairs - some red and black Terminators, and a pair of dark blue and white - I mean, it would be rude not to, right? Other than that, and a quick visit to Gibson Guitars last night, I havent left the hotel. Its too crazy out there! But I am feeling a trip down to Broadway/Tribeca tomorrow (another day off) so I'll build up my strength for that one. Today is a show day - Camden, NJ - and it really is an honor to be up close and personal with Sabbath. They really are a scary sounding band. When they launch into the song, Black Sabbath, I get chills - every time. To answer Ylais' question, Billy Idol is not doing the US Ozzfest. I have been friends with Ozzy for a while, and when the Prince Of Darkness calls you, and invites you to join him on the road for a week or two, there is only one answer!! So I am out here with him, hanging out and having fun.
Bonita - Yes, standing on someone elses stage does make me itch to play! Its great to be out and close to the rock and roll, but it does make me wanna get out there again. Its a good incentive and a reminder of how much I love the road.
Amy - The X Games are a week of extreme sports, usually sponsored by ESPN Sports Network. Its all snowboarding, skateboarding, BMXing and stuff like that. I am sure that the show we are trying to confirm is some kind of party, as they usually hit LA and have the games during the day, and shows and parties at night. Once its confirmed, I'll post details.
SSS - What happens when you organize the songs by something else? ie - by artist? And have you played with the print options? Depending on what version of I-Tunes you are using, it should be possible, so keep tweaking.
Ylais - I wont be out there like the rest of the town, hitting 5 auditions a day! But I will put it out there that I like it, and that I would like to do more. If I get an audition, I'll give it my best shot. Its just fun for me.
Laurie - Well now, I haven't actually listened to any reggae for years! And it looks like I am coming back next Sunday, so I will miss another week of CFR - a bummer, but I am sure that Dave will be as funny as he always is!!
Jay - On the ball and as observant as usual! Options are definately open, and things in the pipeline. Thats all I am saying.
Aaron - I am up to chapter 5 in the new Potter opus, and enjoying the book loads.
Zanabee - The Black And Blue tour? Wow - very cool. And I can tell you that they are as good as they have ever been on this years Ozzfest. War Pigs, NIB, Fairies With Boots ...... Heavy shit, baby!!
I would like to finish off with a small observation about large crowds of people. Now I dont know if its because I dont get wasted anymore, or if I am getting old, or if I am just plain missing something. But at the last Ozzfest, it had been raining earlier in the day, and the ground was really muddy. At some point, a mud fight started that had to be seen to be believed. I mean the sky was dark with flying mud!! Now, I just want to figure out why, exactly! I mean, even when I was out of my mind, in my early 20's, lying face down in the mud at Reading festival, it didnt occur to me to start throwing the stuff! People were staggering out of the lawn area the other day, hurt from the mud war going on....... is it a macho thing? I dont understand!! I watched as these people continued to throw shit in the air, and also watched as the same people came running out of the venue, clutching their heads after being hit by clumps of hard mud!! Is that fun? Do they go home going ..."Fuck, that was a great mud fight. Got a real good one right to my temple?!" Interesting ......
Anyway, I have time to get out and buy Constantine on DVD before the bus shows up to take us to the show. I've done 5 cups of the hotels finest coffee, smoked myself silly (I HAVE to stop that!!) and I am ready for the day. I hope everyone reading this has a good day, and I hope you will all continue to be a part of the chatter that keeps me putting one foot in front of the other around here! Take it easy and I'll see ya soon.
Peace
Billy

ha! got a kick out of your post. your insane to walk 14 blocks in this. next time you do so you best be wearing a speedo. it is so goddamn hot and humid in nyc, it's like a friggin concrete oven. i only had to walk 2 blocks today, 59th-57th, yet i am drenched in sweat...i think ladies find it really attractive to have sweat stains on your back when your at work.
there's a new(ish) bape store downtown on greene st. (2 blocks off broadway) if your into that thing.

I don't get the throwing things at gigs either. the worst I ever saw was the Donington Monsters of Rock with Kiss and Ozzy. They searched folks going in but some bright sparl was handing out free 12" records! These started flying across the field, I even saw them being hurled upright, can you imagine the damage of that coming down on your ear... er what ear.
The srowing the obligatgorytupidest thing on the day was one guy throwing the obligatory bottle of 'liquid' except after his 360 degree spin he let go just as the guy in fronts girlfriend turned round to see what was going on. It slammed so hard into her face it nearly took her head off. Watching the thrower just plead his apologies as her boyfriend mechanically pummelled him into the ground was karma right there. Be safe at concert kids, don't forget the kevlar body armour.

Oh right on!
How are you doing with your eyes?

Billy, Man, I am glad you are having a blast. The whole walking "14" blocks....I used to live on the East Coast and you made me remember how long some of those blocks are in NYC...esp. in the summer with all that humidity. I hope you have alot of fun and I look forward to the pics. Thanks.

We picked up Constantine this morning as well. Are you going to venture out to see Charilie and the Chocolate Factory while there? It's a cute one!!

Billy, sounds like humidity hell! Bet it makes you miss California!
I don't understand the "throwing things" either. Especially at the artists on stage... that makes no sense to me at all.
It also pisses me off when I go to a concert and they won't let me bring in a water bottle (which in Arizona at 113 degrees is a must) because they say that people will throw the bottles... and then I get inside, and they are selling them! Man, that makes me mad.

It is quite hot here isn't it? I'm glad you're having a good time!

Billy, the subway is your best friend in the city. It's still hot, but it's quick and there's almost always some sort of entertainment going on down there. On the throwing of things, personally speaking, I noticed a huge shift in the general attitude at shows (metal and punk) when the jock kids started showing up on the scene. This is going to sound really odd, but the mosh pit used to be so much more orderly before they showed up. I blame mtv. ;) I hope you all have a lot of fun in the city despite the wet heat.

Billy,
What did you get to do at gibson? Also how is the digital guitar coming out. Are you using it for anything really cool?

yeah, those jocks mosh at folk concerts. :S rofl.
I was going to say about that throwing stuff..something similar, it's like going to see footie a few years ago-before they made it PC for women to watch it here. guys going to fight and that's it. or going to see their team play, then enjoying the punch up afterwards, and coming home telling all their war stories. seems those ppl are showing up at concerts and festivals now.
Then again, I had a good friend Tracy, in high school back in the 80's, who threw her disposable lighter at the stage when she went to see, I think it was Journey, and it hit the singer in the head, and it was on the news that he had concussion from being hit by a lighter thrown at him. I remember thinking Tracy was a dope for throwing it though. I'm not a Journey fan, but hey, I'm less of a fan of people doing stupid, and cruel things like that. :P Beer? Yeah that's it, drink beer, and it will cause you to throw items at your fellow revellers.

Good point about the jocks Anna. I hadn't thought of that. I do remember in the 80's going to heavy metal and punk shows where the mosh pit was basically "slam dancing"; nobody was trying to hurt anybody and it was kind of fun. I stopped going into the mosh pit when people started getting mean. But I don't remember when exactly that began....

OH I was going to mention, this subject remeinded me of when I went tubing on the Salt River (in Arizona) a few weeks back.
It gets a bit crowded on the river, and I could see a big mass of people in their tubes up ahead on the river, throwing things at each other. I was wary because I didn't know what they were throwing. It looked like maybe rocks or something, and we were headed right for them.
However, when the current brought us to the place where the massive throwing-fight was going on, it turned out to be marshmallows! A big ol' marshmallow fight on the river. Fun times.

Billy!!!! Did you miss me? I was gone, you know, oh, nevermind, I'm back..I guess it is hot throughout the entire bloody US..Vegas was 117-118, and with the wind blowing, it felt like I was walking behind a BUS!! But it was all good, got a pic of myself striking a Billy pose in front of the Camp Freddy case at the Hard Rock, sat at a poker table, but didn't play, at the Wynn. and Got married (um, to a George Clooney wax figure!!)
ok, so make sure you post a proper review of Constantine, if memory serves me, it inspired our dear Dave to quit smoking for a bit, and, while I'm on THAT subject...do you still go 'dark' when Ozzy begins his anti-smoking diatribes?
love to you and Jen and ALL dohenyites

Yeah, by my estimations I think it's safe for me to say that around about '89 is when it began to get mean. Does anyone remember the way it looked from afar when all the heavy metal boys up front would head bang in unison all in a neat and orderly row ? Or how about being engulfed in the one giant pulsating mob of a Ramones show ? I Loved that the most. And the circle pits never used to be about hitting each other on purpose, they were just a place to let go and be free to dance really big with all your crazy friends. They really did have a sort of controlled chaos about them. And being on the edge of the pit meant being part of what held it together, contained. These days I see girls standing on the outskirts of the pit just falling over like little dolls. Now I just sound like an old lady...kids today... lol.

Hey Billy. Glad you're having fun at the Ozzfest, me and bf weren't planning on going this year (broke as a joke) but apparantly we're getting hooked up with lawn ticket things. Looking forward to seeing Zombie and Sabbath for sure.
Wait, so how do I become a part of this Rogues Gallery thingy? Is it open to all, or only a select few?
How are your eyes doing?

Was it '89? hmmmm...thinking, thinking...I remember a little bullshit like that when I was in college, so that's got to be maybe '87, '88, close to '89 though isn't it? Pissed me off. I can place it sort of. me n my mates used to go to loads of hardcord punk shows, and funny, no one ever got hurt, it was more about i dunno 'togetherness'. Then came a time in the US of A when the Beastie Boys were surged upon by the "frat boys". Took'em a while to open their eyes and ears, but they caught on. Then they ruined it, and started punching people like a bunch of buttheads that they are/were. Dicks. From then on you weren't safe at ANY concert. They'd mosh to Barbara Streisand. (shaking my head) rofl.
Posted by: ylais at July 21, 2005 05:00 AM
Wait, I've NEVER been to a Streisand concert. Just an analogy, or metaphor..or whatever it is...
Off to check the dictionary, I always mix those 2 up.
