NIGHTMARE!!

Band_onstage

Wow. I'm glad thats over. Last nights charity show at the Henry Fonda Theater was ..... well..... interesting, to say the least. The cause, Friends Of El Faro, is a completely worthy cause, and we are all pleased to have been asked to help. Its an orphanage in Mexico that is struggling to stay open. So of course, we agreed to be a part of the evening. Soundcheck was in the afternoon - and both Jon and Sean couldnt make it. So the other three of us messed about as best we could, but it was pretty pointless, as it just wasnt possible to get an accurate check without those two.
When I came back to the venue about 10.30pm, the attendance was pretty low. Sophie B Hawkins was onstage doing her thing, which while it is professional and sounded great, is NOTHING like what we do. I went downstairs and hung out in our dressing room, and WideAwake came onstage and did their thing. A little more rock and from where I was, it sounded cool. By the time we came onstage, it was about 12.30pm. And of course, like I had been saying to everyone, most of the slim audience had gone home. Well, wouldnt you? The doors opened at 6.30pm!!! People had been there for 6 hours!!! Who's gonna wait around to see Doheny play? Well, Wendy and Jezzi for starters!!! Wonderful to see you both there - we tried our best girls!! But playing a 1000 seat theater to 30 people is a tough call. Our wives, girlfriends and a few friends hung out and watched us scrape through a ten song set, and from where we were onstage, it sounded like the inside of a washing machine, with a REALLY loud snare drum mixed in!! We couldnt hear a thing - poor Tony could not hear ANY note he played - just a really low rumbling noise, accompanied by a tiny clicking noise!! The sound onstage was absolutely terrible. We did what we could, and got off as quickly as possible. All I can say is that we tried to participate in a good thing - next time, hold the event at The Key Club and make the evening shorter ...... by about three hours. But keep the Freaks!! The guys, dressed as women ..... on stilts? Amazing!! Check out a pic of Sean with a couple of his new friends!

OK - so its CFR tonight, and I believe its myself and Donovan, as Dave has something he needs to do. It'll be nice to do it with Dono - he hasnt been at the station for a while now. I am sure some 80's Electro will find its way into the mix tonight!!

Kim - First of all, I have also slept in a train carriage at Orpington Station....in December!! Its not the Four Seasons Hotel, thats for sure! And I think all Subways are the same - as Bobbi-O puts it - "smells like shit, piss and puke which is magnified 100x when the unbearable heat and humidity set in during the summer."

Bobbi-O - Yeah, we will be looking at all labels, both major and indie. Each has its own ups and downs, and we will try and go with someone that believes in the music, AND has a little cash to keep us out on the road.

For those of you emailing and posting about Tiger - for me, it just installed straight over the top of what I had, with no problems at all. Seems to be working just fine. And its worth it - I love the little widget things they have included.

Gotta get started with my day. I have to go see a couple of friends, run a few errands, and keep working on a few musical things I am doing at home. Have a great weekend, and check out CFR if you can tonight. Take care and see ya'll soon.

Peace

Billy

Isn't that wierd that I just asked when Dono was going to be on CFR again?!! Wierd right?
I'll be listening tonight. I'll set my alarm in case I dose off. Exhausted from Mum's visit.
Odd they scheduled rock for last though isn't it? I mean at the disco you always have that last dance music last.
The stilt people must be the way in thing. We had them last year at an event Cardiff Museum. Very cool! Always reminds me of Marilyn Manson.
Love and hugs to all,
Lisa

Billy you guys sounded great. I saw you guys last year at the spiderclub and saw you guys at the viper room but fast forward to last night, and WOW.

You guys sound like a different band. I don't know how to say this but you can tell how much work you have been putting into it. Seriously WOW. If you haven’t got signed yet, don’t worry cause you will. You guys were good before but now you are at a whole different level.

Great job!
I had to get some sleep but I’m on the pictures now…

Hi Wendy! Funny, they couldn't hear themselves, and still sounded great!

Posted by: ylais at May 14, 2005 10:03 AM

I was just thinking the same thing!!!

Especially the new song, Jon's vocal's are so amazing, it was a shame they didn't play earlier, and I know Sophie's musical style is on the other end of the doheny spectrum, but I loved her SOOOO much, girl power baby!!!

I am sure that El Faro raised tens of thousands of dollars last night and they are such a worthy cause, if nothing else, they sure know how to throw a party, free gin, tequila, beer, obscene amounts of food, and every volunteer had such a great attitude! I was treated SO well, we fell in love with the girl who brought us drinks, the guy who made sure we didn't trip on the stairs, and especially the celebrities I met that I didn't know were celebrities until I saw their pictures on WireImage and realized that Rosa Blasi was helping me bid on silent auction, Josh Duhamel was the one standing next to us during Molly Sim's speech and the head of the event was the one standing next to me while doheny was playing saying, "Aren't they a great band?"

oh, and the Twin Peaks connection for Dave's Madchen...Sherilyn Fenn sharing a couch with Wendy and I, while we were taking pics of another sweet girl we had met

great night, great vibe, awesome music...not a bad way to spend 150 bucks

Listening to CFR as I type. Dono's talking about sneaking into the Chinese theatre. Man, I wish I could've been there for the show. I'd have hung out with those girls to the very last minute!! Good times!! It was for a good cause, and I'm sure will be appreciated. Peace and love, my dears.

I really need a lot of practice (Overall I was having an off day) but it was sooo much fun so it doesn't matter.

Have a goodnight.

Thanks for the comment Billy, nice to know someone can relate. Maybe sleeping at Orpington should be a Rites of Passage for all punk musicians. Nah ...

I hate shit sound! It is one of my main gripes. The band can be on form, but let down by a sound engineer with 'special needs', and I genuinely feel bad and embarassed for the band (has happened a few times to all of us).

Take it easy

Ahh Billy! Just listened to Camp Freddy Radio, and not only did I get a pistols song, you closed with Rachel Stamp. I've liked them since I heard their song "Black Cherry" a few years ago. One of the hardest working bands in the UK but aren't in the spotlight like they should be. Nice one :)

Wendy, I want to say publicly that your pics ROCK!! I'm sooooo jealous of you girls! I love that Jen was right up there taking pictures of you, like your #1 fan (aaawwwwe, thats so sweet!) Can't tell how it sounded (obviously), but you guys looked fantastic!

Can't wait 'till the next show (uh...when did you say that would be??)

Posted by: Abby at May 15, 2005 09:24 PM

Sorry to hear that the show didn't turn out as well as you guys wanted it to, but here's to the hopes that Doheny's efforts (and those of other bands involved, o' course) garnered enough funds to keep El Faro up and running. It was definitely a noble cause, and in most cases such as this, any contribution is better than none at all.

Rock on.

Were there really lots of girls calling for Dono during CFR? (now I'm thinking, he did say that right? something like that. after the last week's event when I was abducted by aliens during Camp Teddy)
Will we be having Caption Contests on here?
Who am I? Where am I?
(coffee please)

Do you think John Lydon would ever stop by CFR, or maybe Steve Jones' show? Or do Camp Freddy?

Love and hugs

skot!!!! Happy Birthday!! I wish I had known, I would have consumed some cheese in your honor.. speaking of that, there was a guy on the roof at the Music Box on Friday, asking no one in particular where the meat was, it was before they brought out the midnight snacks, so he sees the fruit table and he says gleefully....ahhhhh, CHEEESE!!!

I almost burst out laughing, thinking of you!!

love to Billy this fine day!! Billy, come to Casino Morongo, I know you pass it on way to Palm Springs, they have a wonderful new casino, with a beautiful hotel, and a couple really nice clubs, It would be a wonderful venue for Doheny!!!!

Hey Billy,

What do you think of Dave's new site?
Ithink it's way cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Matt

Posted by: Matt at May 16, 2005 07:45 PM

BTW Billy....I think you should definitely get together that album of songs from the "previous lives" of Camp Freddy members. I'll bet there is some truely great stuff to be heard! (guess that would come after the Camp Freddy album.....)

Posted by: Abby at May 16, 2005 09:10 PM

Happy Birthday Skot! Sorry to hear about your finger. I am actually missing two fingers and half my thunmb on my left hand. T'ain't no big thang.

Hey Billy. Just watching clips from Camp Freddy shows on the new 6767tv Dave's got going. You have a great voice, you really ought to sing more. :)
