SICK SICK SICK

Billy_suit_2Well, this cold/flu thing has kicked my ass. I have been wiped out in bed for two days, lost my voice and I feel like shit. I dont get sick very much but when I do, it floors me. I feel a little better today - well enough to get back on the computer anyway. But I hate being unwell - I'm not very good at it!!
I missed my first Doheny rehearsal yesterday - the other guys went in and jammed but I was just too messed up to go in. I figure I need to catch up on my rest and take it easy this week. Very hard for me to do - I naturally need to be working on something all the time.

Jezebel - We do have an agent. Contact Andrew Goodfriend at The Agency Group in Los Angeles.

Tina - My back tattoo took about 30 hours to finish. I did it in about 5 or 6 sittings.

Maria - Welcome to the Doheny family. Its a pleasure to have you here.

Skot - Unfortunately, its not possible to broadcast the actual show on Dec 2nd. What I meant is that in addition to our usual Saturday radio show, we will be doing a one-hour special live from inside the Key Club that day. No doubt the topic will be The Panic Channel, Doheny and The Tints, but there wont be any actual live music broadcast. Maybe we can hook that up next year.

The good news is that the new furniture arrived yesterday!! So I intend to curl up on the new sofa and stare at the TV all day long. Dave's band, The Panic Channel, play tonight, and I am hoping to be well enough to get down there and see them . Right now it doesnt look good, but a ton of Starbucks, Camels and DayQuil might change that. Todays picture is by Maryanne Bilham - and I love it. She takes a great photograph.

I have to get off this computer now - I'm starting to feel weird and need to lie down again. Thank you for all your get well messages and have a great day everyone. I want to leave you with a question - what is the lyric that touches you the most? What line, or lines from a song have made a difference in your lives?

Peace

Billy

Billy,

Get better man. I also am sick but not as bad as you are. I am just toughing it out on some cold medicine. Medicine always makes me even more messed up than if I don't take any.

Have fun at the show tonight and give us all the detaiis.

Much love,
Pony

I hope you feel better, Billy. I hope you are able to get plenty of rest this week.

I've been in bed sick too, since Sunday night, so today I finally broke down and am going to the dreaded Doctor.

Get Well,
Karen

ok, to echo the motherly sentiment, my dear Billy, every time you smoke a cigarette, you deplete your body of vitamin C.....so, just cut down until you feel better, k?

oh, and salsa, the hotter the better!!! go for it....

ok, did you know I am a lyric-driven chick....my friends give me lyrics instead of scripture when I am down...
so hear is a snippet of one of my favs, from Ani DiFranco's Untouchable Face

Fuck you
and your untouchable face
Fuck you
for existing in the first place
Who am I
that I should be vying for your touch
Who am I
Bet you can't even tell me that much

oh, and when I am NOT feeling bitter...
I woke up this morning
and my penis was missing
It happens all the time, you see....
it's detachable

I was going to request that last week on CFR, but the KIDS were there!!!
love to you and yours,
jezebel(PANICing tonight!)

A quick lyric or 2 comes to mind for me, not necassarily life altering but strike a chord in me nonetheless.

"There's no point in askin' you'll get no reply" from the Sex Pistols "Pretty Vacant"
for one and "Love all around, when the music is loud" from The Cult's "Nirvana" is another.

Have a good day Billy.

Tons more I'm sure, but those 2

hey Billy,
thnx for clarifying the 1 hour broadcast info....

some FAVE LYRICs of mine

- Syd Barrett (from the song: Terrapin)
i really love you
and I mean you
the star above you, crystal blue
well, oh, baby, my hairs on end about you

- Frank Zappa (song: Oh No)
Oh no
I don't believe it
You say that you think you know
The meaning of love
You say love is all we need
You say
With your love you can change
All of the fools
All of the hate
I think you're probably
Out to lunch

Oh no
I don't believe it
You say that you think you know
The meaning of love
Do you really think it can be told?
You say that you really know
I think
You should check it again
How can you say
What you believe
Will be the key to a
World of love?

All your love -
Will it save me?
All your love -
Will it save the world
From what we can't understand
Oh no
I don't believe it

Sorry to hear you've been sick Billy. I pretty much had the same thing a couple of weeks ago and did as Karen and finally went to the doctor for some nice antibiotics. Also, Nyquil helped me to sleep--just passed right out. That stuff is pretty amazing. Of course, it is almost pure alcohol. Let me know if the Starbucks/Camels cold remedy works. I found that not only the meds helped but getting plenty of sleep and of course, the quality daytime programming. Feel better :)
Favorite lyrics? There are so many...The Smith's "That Jokes Isn't Funny Anymore"--basically the whole song has amazing lyrics and music. And also, the line in Roxy Music's "More than This" when Bryan Ferry sings, "It was fun for a while, there was no way of knowing, like a dream in the night, who can say where we're going?"
And of course, Southern Death Cult's "Moya"--"The kids of a coca-cola nation are too doped up to realize, time is running out, Nagasaki's crying out. The doomwatch says it's time to give back what you took away, uncle sam meets the reaper, wounded knee over again". The lyrics of the Manic Street Preachers also affected me, especially on the Holy Bible album and the song "4st 7lb" and the line, "I want to walk in the snow and not leave a foot print. I want to walk in the snow and not soil it's purity". And more recently the song "Strength" by the Alarm and the lyrics: "I walk alone 'cross the outskirts of town
I can't control what I'm going through now
Will you light the fire that I need to survive
Will you be the life blood
Coursing through my veins
Will you open up the door & let me out of this place".
Okay, enough from me. So many songs have changed me each in their own way.

Favourite lyric?

"Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin..."

Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic and only Leonard Cohen could pen such elegant words. Get better asshole!(wink!)

"..in the eye of the storm we keep each other warm."

i've heard that zinc helps in clearing up a cold. those cough drops called cold eeze have a high zinc content for that reason, but they taste of pennies.

as for lyrics. . .
"i watched you suffer a dull aching pain" - rolling stones, wild horses
"and you're not alone, give me your hands, because you're wonderful" - bowie, rock and roll suicide
"even rainbows have the blues" - ringo starr, vertical man

okay, so the ringo one is a bit of a joke, but i can't listen to it without giggling a little

Freaking me out for a while..that dude on the Key flyer for the TPC/Doheny/Tints show. The orange one. The drawing, that guy it looks like my ex-boyfriend in the States. Oo
Weird.

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling. After the pitchshifter show in Manchester last month I came down with horrendus flu which took a good couple of weeks to sort out (of course you have the benefit of LA's climate compared to blighty).

As for lyrics, the ones that immediately spring to mind are lyrics my friend wrote for songs in his band My Life In The Making. Funny, I would have thought lyrics from more established and well known bands would spring to mind, but I guess as my friend wrote these and I know him on a personal level, they speak to me more personally, if you know what I mean.

"When I need you most, you're walking away" - Hands Down

"What use is this? My hand on my heart, my heart on my sleeve. Taken back, taken all this time, someone else's conclusion leads me to the end. Thanks for nothing I can say I've tried. Someone's indecision cost me everything." - Someone Else's Conclusion.

"This is the part where you forgave (this is the part that I'll forget). This is the part that I forgive (this is the part that I regret)." - The Part Where

Get well soon Billy :)

Billy, take care of yourself.
Fluids & rest good =)
Cigs & caffeine bad =(
Don't spread yourself so thin - you deserve a little down time every now and then.

Here's my contribution to the lyrics list:

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows that the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight is fixed
The poor stay poor and the rich get rich
That’s how it goes

Everybody knows that the boat is sinking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody’s got this broken feeling
Like their momma or their dog just died
Everybody's hands are in their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that it’s now or never
Everybody knows that it’s me or you
Everybody knows that you live forever
When you had a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joe still pickin cotton
For your ribbons and bows

Everybody knows you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discrete
So many people you had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

I have quite a few songs that, when I hear certain lines or lyrics, it gives me chills or it reminds me of something special. Here's one particular song that's always stuck with me. It's a song by a Canadian band called 54-40. It's called 'She's a Jones'.

Where the night bird sings on earth's human shores
To know the change and to feel it
She forgot the stars the sun and the moon
And her eyes were wild lips were starved turning to poison
It's a beauty that must die Like a murmur in the wind

I can't let her go
Got to have her she's a Jones
Tripping on a dream girl

One day I wrote her name in the sand
And the waves came and washed it back
I wrote it again with a second hand and
All for love, nothing back
Painful pleasure turns to pleasing pain at the end of my mind
It's a beauty that must die
Like a murmur in the wind

In and out and in my head you go with me alive or dead
In and out she got to be a dream girl

It's not about looking at each other
But together in the same direction
Like they did in the golden age
They put their lives in the trust of heaven
And the kindest words she'll ever know are still waiting to be said
It's a beauty that must die
Like a murmur in the wind

The part about looking in the same direction is what made me fall in love with that song. Something about the whole song is very moving, but those lines in particular really struck a chord in me. I think it's really sweet.

Ok, I'm done being sappy now!

hey billy, hope you get well soon. I know it sucks being sick and can't do anything, but it's better to make sure you're well, so stay home and take care of yourself. ;)

As for lyrics, there are a few that have very personal meaning for me, I'll share a bit of them here.

Besides The Cult, my fav group is Blue Rodeo (canadian group) and most of their music touches me very personally. In particular:

Trust Yourself (a bit of lyric)
someday soon
and I don't know when
your little world
will come crashing in
don't think twice
I'll be around
turn your back
someone's gonna let you down
you know that it's true
nobody led you on
they left that to you
now you'll be alone
when the sun comes up
with your tattered little dreams
and a broken cup
then you'll have to
trust yourself
and don't believe in anymore lies

House of Dreams (bit of lyric)
Can't stand the sight of myself
Lying in bed all day with the curtains drawn
Staring at the clock on the window ledge
The angry words you said come back so strong
Sometimes love quits
Oh when the pieces don't fit
And suddenly all your world
Falls to the floor
And all your wild days
Oh fall away
Can't see much point in them anymore
In this house of dreams
I let you walk like a ghost unseen
Girl on the day you left
Out walked my everything

Rain Down on Me (bit of lyric)
You never need forgiveness
left home at seventeen
raised up on hate
to a life that's second rate
I've seen that look before
behind some closing door
You couldn't be delivered
just won't be denied
too much a child
confident and wild

And finally the moment I heard this song, very much identified with it. i was about 16 when I first started asking myself these questions.

Dear God (by XTC)
Dear God, hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction
in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see them starving on their feet
'cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction
in amount of tears and
all the people that you made in your image,
see them fighting in the street
'cause they can't make opinions meet
about God, I can't believe in you

Did you make disease,
and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind
after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but...
your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
us crazy humans wrote it,
you should take a look,
all the people that you made in your image
still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain't, and so do you,
dear God, I can't believe in
I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
and it's the same the whole world 'round.
The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive
that my heart's here upon my sleeve.
If there's one thing I don't believe in

it's you....

Sorry it's so long ;)

Hey Billy:

Good talking to you on Saturday night.

Like so many, I am touched by music. I love the feeling when I hear a song that I can't live without knowing the words, owning it to listen over & over. It's too hard to pinpoint just one...but, these words haunt my head:

Engulfed by you
What can I do?
When history's my cage...
Look forward to a future in the past?

Happy, huh?

I hope today is better than yesterday! Have a great day. Hope you're feeling better.

Ok, I was sappy earlier.. Now it's time to share some lyrics that are the complete opposite to that. This band is hysterical, they always put me in a good mood, and the song lyrics ALWAYS crack me up...

Supersuckers - Pretty Fucked Up

She’s got a man on the side
Yeah, she’s with him today
And I probably won’t die
But it sure feels that way
And I used to be strong
I used to be tough
And she used to be pretty
But now she’s just pretty fucked up

Oh, pretty fucked up
Yeah, pretty fucked up now
Oh, she used to be pretty
But now she’s just pretty fucked up

Now I know people change
And sometimes that’s good
But some people don’t
When maybe they should
But right now that don’t help me
I might just throw up
Cause it sure does feel shitty
When things just get pretty fucked up

Oh, pretty fucked up
Yeah, pretty fucked up now
Oh, she used to be pretty
But now she’s just pretty fucked up

Now a long time ago
I made her feel this way
And I begged her forgiveness
Yeah, I begged her to stay
And she said that she loved me
It made me feel good
Yeah, it made me feel giddy
But now I feel pretty fucked up

Oh, pretty fucked up
Yeah, pretty fucked up now
Oh, she used to be pretty
But now she’s just pretty fucked up

The last two lines....classic! LOL

Heidi, here's lyrics to a song that always cheers me up, for some reason at times I even get the giggles. ;)

Northern Pikes (canadian band)

She Ain't Pretty

I had two jobs, I had dishwater hands
And on the weekend in a rock & roll band
One Friday night in my hometown bar
In walked a girl who looked like a movie star
She stared at me and it was turning me on
She said she worked in a beauty salon
I heard a voice inside me say
She ain't pretty she just looks that way
We made a date to go for a drink
I wore my jeans and she wore a mink
There was this misconception all over town
That she ate lonely guy heart by the pound
She said "Take me home, there won't be no fuss"
I said "Sure you got some change for the bus"
Watching her leave I heard the bartender say
"She ain't pretty she just looks that way"
So, uh, I called her up, her father was home
Said "She's busy she can't come to the phone"
I held my breath, decided to wait
A guy like me doesn't get many dates
I fell in love with a model from hell
It took some time for my hormones to tell
That chasing her has been a grave mistake
She ain't pretty she just looks that way
Her ego wrote cheques incredibly fast
But her personality didn't have the cash
I laughed out loud to my total dismay
She ain't pretty she just looks that way
She ain't pretty she just looks that way
She ain't pretty
She ain't pretty
She ain't pretty
She ain't pretty she just looks that way

I think the reason it cheers me up is I know a few people like her. ;)

Oh, I have some real angst lyrics I love from the past..here's one I used to sing, or shout along to:
Little Bitch~The Specials (Jerry Dammers)

One, two

If you ever hear a noise in the night your body starts to sweat
It shakes and shivers in fright
You go and sleep with your mother, she hates your guts
She knows that you love her so she holds you tight
All through the night, until the broad daylight
And when she doesn't come home you have to sleep alone
Then you wet your bed, and I think that's sad
For a girl of nineteen it's more than sad, it's obscene

One, two

And your girlfriend sweet little seventeen
She's got her layered hair, and her flared jeans
You know what that means? She's just a little queen
She shares your London flat, she thinks that London's where it's at, although it stinks
And when it rains you wear your hat, and your plum coloured PVC wet look maxi-mac
You tie your ginger hair back in a bun
You're the ugliest creature under the sun

one, two, go

And you think it's about time that you died, and I agree, so you decide on suicide
You tried but you never quite carried it off
You only wanted to die in order to show off
And if you think you're gonna bleed all over me, you're even wronger than you'd normally be
And the only things you want to see are kitsch
The only thing you want to be is rich
Your little pink up-pointed nose begins to twitch
I know, you know, you're just a little bitch

One, two

[isn't this tough picking your fave lyics, mine change depending on my mood..decided i won't go posting the whole songs here..it'll get out of hand]

Public Image by P.I.L. love that now, loved it then.
Knew all the words.

Funeral Pyre by The Jam. Yeah more pure anger angst yelling your soul out with nice little soulful bits in between.

Submission, you all know who did that don't you? Yeah yeah, The Sex Pistols.

Loads of Depeche Mode songs. Whatever they came out with seemed to match exactly where I was at. Very spooky. But I'm over that now. :P

Back to The Darkness because I'm feeling cheeky..lol. :D

Aw, thanks for the welcome Billy!
Hope you're feeling a lot better! A cold-buster boost from Jamba Juice always work for me.

There are a bunch of songs/lyrics that I've been touched by... hard to choose. But U2's "All that you can't leave behind" and "one", John Lennon's "Imagine" and "What a wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong are a few of them.

Posted by: mortisha8 at November 17, 2004 09:39 PM

Hope you get better soon Billy. Triple up on the C and easy on the zinc, lots of water water water and sleep sleep sleep.

The most touching lyrics ? Sonic immortalization of bittersweet times is of itself touching and the words to the story go like this "I'm overflowing one cell at a time. Someone else is tasting what used to be mine. My frame of reference is falling apart and the fruit of our labour is starting to rot..." Amazing how pretty the wreckage can be, and we call it art, but then again in the words of Stevie Nicks, "thunder only happens when it's raining, players only love you when they're playing...dreams unwind and love's a state of mind" So, in the end, it's all good anyway....

Get well soon, so you can rock out proper.......

Posted by: Rainyday at November 17, 2004 09:42 PM

Hey Tina~I used to love XTC. In fact, they were the first group I saw at a "proper" concert, they opened for The Cars.
Great stuff. I love "We're only making plans for Nigel..." All good songs though, rare that.

Billy, I also think you look hot in that suit. :D Very smart.

"Little Willy Willy won't go home, you can't get Willy cos Willy won't go." Lol I LOVE The Sweet's early stuff.

hey everyone, cool pic Billy..theres just so many lyrics that bring back memories, good and bad.Stevie Nicks comes to mind this mornin though,(im in a mood, lol)
Silver Springs:
Time cast a spell on you
But you won't forget me
(I was such a fool)
I know I could've loved you
But you would not let me
(Give me one more chance)
I'll follow you down
'Til the sound of my voice
Will haunt you
(Haunt you)
You'll never get away from
The sound of the woman that loves you

Time has come for you and me

We'll fly on wings of thoughts and dreams
And run through times of rhymes and schemes
