RADIO SHOW
Saturday again, folks, which means Camp Freddy Radio on Indie 103.1. And Matt is back from being on the road with Velvet Revolver. I believe Dave will be popping in as well, although I know he has a busy day today. I want to discuss the power of Blogs like this and 6767, and how bands need to be building communities on the web. I also want to further Daves idea of having a laptop in the studio with a camera and doing some live, on air web stuff.
The Dolls were very cool - Sam Yaffa from Hanoi Rocks on bass, and two original Dolls - David and Sylvain - on vocals and guitar. All the songs were played, and despite only two original members, they sounded great. Audience screaming "Trash!!", "Jet Boy", "Pills", "Personality Crisis".......the set list was perfect. I went with Billy Duffy and Jerry Cantrell, and we all said that we never thought we would see the words, "New York Dolls" on a ticket stub!! A good night out (except for the alien abduction on the way home......those probes get everywhere!)
Yeah, Linda - the band love the blog. I'll get 'em on here soon. Except Colin (who doesnt own a computer.....which is why you've never seen him on a board here!!). He just doesnt do the "Computer" thing! Hope your computer is feeling better.
Suzanne - you know what? I didnt ask, but I promise you I will find out who did those paintings for you next week.
I am sending the old Cult tour diaries and the Breathe Home Video to Karen. It'll take me a few days to get my act together, but she will put them up and you can all have a laugh reading them.
So lets see what you make of this. What was the coolest show you've ever seen? Its a hard one - I think of Janes Addiction SUPPORTED by Nine Inch Nails at Universal Amphitheatre. I think of The Rolling Stones at The 100 Club in London. I think of Guns N Roses at the Marquee in London. And what about The Sex Pistols at Shepards Bush Empire. I'll think about mine - you tell me yours.
Gonna go and put some music together for tonights show - have a great weekend.
Billy
By the way - todays pic is of me (with blue hair!) and Jon at the Kerrang awards a few years ago.

Great question Billy, gotta be The Pistols for me, Dallas, TX '96, Filthy Lucre Tour.
I wasn't old enough to see them in Tulsa at the legendary Cains Ballroom in '78 so having the opportunity to catch them when I never thought there would be chance was absolutely mind blowing.
A close second would be The Cult in Tulsa rocking Z104.5's annual birthday bash. You guys hit the stage right at dusk, a very cool visual to say the least. I remember the extended intro to "Rise" like it was yesterday, 20,000 screaming idiots (me included) going insane, throwing devil horns, crowd surfing et al.

Soooo so many.
Off the top of my head.
U2, first US tour, '79
U2, Joshua Tree tour, '87
The Clash/Elvis Costello weekend, '82
Siouxie & the Banshess/Julian Cope tour '87
Born in the USA tour '84/'85
Camp Freddy, Roseland Ballroom, NYC, 2/22/03

This is a major toss up...I have so many favorite shows. Since there is always a story that goes along with the concerts I go to, it makes each of them memorable.
Well--my first Cult shows were special. The first show I went to I was 17 (wow, five years ago!!) in NYC. But in 2001 I went to see the Cult twice in July. It was PHENOMENAL!!! That was the first time I met Ian and I thought I had died and gone to heaven...Of course, seeing the Cult in November 2001 I got to meet you, Billy, and some crazy haired dude that you insisted we get a photo with--it was pretty funny. Meeting Matt was great too, he is sooo nice. In July 2002 I saw The Sex Pistols in London with all my Cult friends. It was awesome! Some guy decided to kiss my forehead before jumping into the mosh pit. On the way back on the train this guy noticed my Cult Electric era patch and we got into a Cult discussion. It all just added to the already great concert experience. I got to hear my favorites--especially Submission. In June 2003 I saw the Doors in Pittsburgh (actually a po-dunk town outside of Pgh)and we came bearing gifts for Ian and who is walking around the venue? Ian! We got into a quick huddle and were like--should we go up to him??? What should we do?! So a friend we coincdentally met up with went up to Ian and he came over. He accepted our gifts graciously and all of a sudden swooped me up and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I think we all walked away in total shock. And the show ROCKED. Ian was amazing. The other great concert experience was seeing HIM and the 69 Eyes in Budapest in 2002 with my two great friends Tammy and Manuela.

Ooohhh...good question today Billy.
Some of my BEST concert experiences have to do with not just the show, but the things that happen on the way there, before the show starts and afterwards. A few that stick out in my mind...
The Cult in Oct '94 for the free show they did at the Commodore Ballroom to thank Vancouver for their hospitality while recording the 1994 album. Holy Barbarians '96 in Amsterdam - great city, great show. The Glastonbury Festival in 1997 - Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Prodigy...an amazing 2 days. The Tragically Hip at Shepherds Bush Empire in 1997 - I think every Canadian in London was there that night and after being away from Canada for almost a year, it felt like home. The Cult in Seattle and Portland in 1999 - roadtrips are the BEST. The Supersuckers doing their 'country set' in 2001, where a full bar-brawl broke out mid-set that included band members, the cops came, and the band partied with those not arrested after the dust settled. Cardboard Vampyres and Doheny at the Roxy July '04 - well worth the trip, and my first taste of the "Tale of Two Billy's Tour" *wink*

Coolest show? Black Flag. Remember it like it was yesterday, but it was sometime before I left for college in August of '85. In this tiny little place in a tiny little town about a 20 minute drive away. Packed - which means there were about 150 kids wall to wall in a room not much larger than my basement. Say what you want about him, but Henry Rollins was amazing. I've been to countless punk shows, and I'd never seen anything like him, and haven't since. Before the show he sat on the floor blocking the hall outside the ladies bathroom, probably because hardly any girls went to shows. So if you had to go, you had to step over him. I made sure I got to step over him. Even before the show, the energy coming off the guy was unbelievable. The show was wild. Henry was wearing only a tiny pair of shorts, and he had that mane of curly hair and the huge tattoo on his back. The "stage" was all of about 18 inches high, and all of us in the front were getting spit on & sweated on. There was no room for a mosh pit, we were all packed like sardines, so you got to know the people standing near you up close & personal. By the time it was over, kids were on the verge of passing out. The water pipes were sweating like the rest of us, and water was constantly dripping from the ceiling. Everyone was soaked - we had to put a towel on the seat my friend's mom's cadillac to drive home. We were all hoarse from screaming the words to every song, and it was 3 days before the ringing in my ears was completely gone.
Definitely the most fun I've ever had at a show.

this one's easy for me. iggy in fall '01, hands down. i found out about the show like three days before it happened, immediately ran out and got tickets, and had the best time of my life. front row, too. it was the first show where i had the ringing in my ears the next morning.

I'll have to add to the running list of Cult shows.
Jacksonville, Fla. 2001 was awesome.
The people and experiences before and after a show are a big factor for me also.
Had a great road trip from Vegas to LA for the Cult shows in 2002, I literally ran away from home..
Flew home to Boston last year to see the Alarm which was great.
I apparently saw Soundgarden back in the day.. but I was having so much fun I blacked it out..Lollapa booza :0

best shows i've seen :
Guns N' Roses 2 nights in a row back in 91 just before UYI came out
Suicidal Tendencies / The Cult / Metallica in 92 (or 93), and The Cult's surprise gig afterwards in a club
Type O Negative always puts on a good show... seen them 3 times in the 90's
Rammstein in 02... if they come through your town go see 'em... fucking excellent show
Demolition 23 in 94 (Mike Monroe, Nasty Suicide, Sam Yaffa w/ Jimmy Clarke... even Andy McCoy joined them on stage that night)
Velvet Revolver 2 months ago... awesome show... their tunes sound way, way better live
RHCP with Navarro back in 96 (i think?)

Ahhhhh when is ur album out man......I love Evergreen!!!!!
Posted by: Colleen at October 2, 2004 07:59 PM
Oh my, SO many to choose from. Every show is great in its own new way. But the ones that stand out are..
The Cult
U2
Brian Setzer
Prince
Chris Isaak
The Cure
And for a new twist I'm trying out country music. Last night I went to see Randy Travis. Had a good time. And man, can that guy get his voice low. Amazing.

You saw NIN, they would be so cool to see.
That is a hard question, all the concerts I've been to have been way cool in their own way. There's something good about every show I've seen. But the ones that stand out the most would be:
Jackyl 1998
Cinderella 2000
The Cult 2001
L.A. Guns 2001, 2002, 2003
Since we're talking about concerts. What show or shows do you wish you could've seen really, really bad but couldn't for some reason or another and now you will never be able to see that band again the way they were when you wanted to see them?
For me it would be Guns 'N' Roses back in the 80's, The Doors, D21C, Robert Plant, NIN, Sex Pistols, and INXS.
Posted by: Karen at October 2, 2004 10:29 PM
Not just any Doors show though. The Doors at the Whisky. I also would have loved to have seen the Stones in the early years (now is just not the same), Led Zeppelin and SDC when it was mental in the very beginning. I missed Guns N Roses in the 80's too, so yeah, they would also be on my list.

The Dolls show the other day reminded me of one of my favorite shows. The New York Dolls with Iggy Pop, Michael Des Barres, and a few other bands at the Hollywood Palladium. My friend and I got to hang out with the Dolls the next day. Another favorite was The Cult at the Hollywood Palladium on Apr 26, 1986.
Billy, I'm glad to see the aliens let you go.

I don't know if I can specify a particular "best show" at this point in my life...tho I agree that everytime I've seen Type O Negative they have just been perfection.
I'm sooooo excited about the Camp Freddy tickets!!! I called in not really expecting to get through let alone get the tix!! It was funny cause I didn't even realize I was on air until I heard it on the dleayed internet stream! LOL thank you soooo much!

I would have loved to have seen Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Manics w/ Richey,
The early Stones, The Pistols (Hate that I never got to see them) and Queensryche,,lol.. for some reason the universe keeps conspiring to keep me from seeing them(3 times it was the Cult's fault) So many more..

Just had to add to bits of random weirdness-
I was looking in google under a search for Billy Morrison...so what comes up? The third item the search found was on mugshots.com of this old crazy looking sex offender named Billy Morrison.
Then I found this http://www.nndb.com/people/456/000044324/
I found the "level of fame" section to be rather amusing...
Concerts I would have liked to see...
The Smiths, Manics with Richey, Queen!!!, Gene Loves Jezebel, and worst of all, I wouldn't have opposed a Neil Diamond concert (closes eyes and awaits flogging from everyone on blog...)
Posted by: Julia at October 3, 2004 09:28 AM
and to add of bands I wish I'd seen...Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim.
Posted by: Julia at October 3, 2004 10:09 AM
lots of bands in the 80's i wish i could have seen...
Killing Joke
Echo & the Bunnymen
Bauhaus
The Smiths
Minor Threat
Dead Kennedys
...tons more

Oh, and who knew Dave's secret dream was to be in a barbershop quartet?!
Hellooo....Helloooo....Helloooo....Hellooooo
I had this vision of you four guys sporting red & white striped jackets & giant moustaches. LMAO!
Posted by: Linda at October 3, 2004 11:07 AM
LMAO.. Matt would be the one wearing the "Mustache rides for free" t-shirt. ;)

Like most people, there have been so many really great concerts I've gone to. I loved the Monsters of Metal, Us Festivals, Lolla, but I have to say my favorite was Led Zeppelin. My mother took me when I was very young (couldn't find a sitter). I stayed awake for the whole show. I also really liked the Glastonbury Festival in 1987 (at least I remember having a good time!). The Cult in '86 were great! Too many... I even liked Duran Duran (don't tell).

I've been to so many concerts, and it's tough to pick a favourite.
Must ponder that. Especially since I can't remember lots of the names of the venues even, or years. I'd have to guess.
I do prefer smaller venues so much, like tiny clubs. I have seen some great stadium shows; but small shows are the best. I love to feel the music.! :D
Echo and the Bunnymen at the forum in NYC, 82? I wore all white 'goth' because I knew everyone would be all in black, and they were! :D Very funny, and I was right under Ian. Bad thing was some dude behind me did some frottage thing on my butt and I couldn't get out of the way fast enough. O.o (puke)
I'll be back with more...oooo..the suspense...the excitement...
Billy, how many piercings do you have? What's your fave hair colour you've had ever? :D
Love
Lisa

Apologies, that was around '84.
1982, was the year of my Adam Ant mania. After a few years of Adam and the Ants mania. One of best shows=Adam and the Ants. NYC. 1981.
Another, INXS, The Beacon Theatre about the same year '81, right at the front standing on the chairs. Looked behind me, a couple were having sex on the floor! :O
Posted by: ylais at October 3, 2004 05:22 PM
One of my crazed over them concerts=The Cult, NYC, maybe that was '85. I'm driving myself insane trying to think of the venue, it was fairly small. I thought I was going to faint with excitement.
That's always a sign of a good show.
Billy Idol, St.John's University. 1982, I dunno maybe that year. O.o Faint.
Posted by: ylais at October 3, 2004 05:29 PM
The Ritz was it? I went to The Ritz a lot, and the Beacon Theatre so sometimes my memory plays tricks on me with those two venues. I'd see a few a night, first at The Beacon, then rush to get cab over to the Ritz! :D
How about worst show? Anyone got one of those?

Anyone else get crazy symbols and stuff when you click on the picture? I can't see it :(
