STUDIO FEVER

TwobillysI LOVE the imagination that you all have. It's funny to dream up a question and watch you all run with it!! Your Surreal Life suggestions had me in stitches. So I'm gonna pick the six best from everyones choices and make that the definitive "Doheny Blog Surreal Life Line Up"! Maybe I'll email it to VH-1 as a suggestion for the next series! My selection from all your ideas would be - Quentin Tarantino (Jay's choice) - the surreal intellectual of the house. Ali G - (from Ylais) - guaranteed to keep the whole house cracking up with laughter. Martha Stewart - (Abby's shout) - Gotta have a good home cooked meal when you're locked in a house with a bunch of freaks. Courtney Love - (a few of you picked Courtney) - having worked with her last weekend, she would be amazing in the house. Sharon Osbourne - (Julia's pick) - I love Sharon, and her and Courtney would be a riot together. And finally Mr Manson - (Mayhems choice) - I would pay good money to see him in this house with Martha Stewart!! The idea of these six faces locked up under one roof is genius.

Today I am working with Tommy Lee on some tracks in Scott Humphrey's studio, The Chop Shop. I'm typing this from Scotts studio in the hills, listening to Chris Chaney's bass tracks being put together. Its a great song and I am flattered to have been asked to do the guitars on this. Tommy is a rock legend and its very cool to be working with him. We started last night, and once all the guitars are done, Nick Carter (yes....THAT Nick Carter, from the Backstreet Boys!!) will be doing the vocals with Tommy. Then this afternoon, the singer from Something Corporate, Andrew McMahon will be in to do another song with us. It looks like Tommy's next record will have a bunch of friends on it, and the tracks are sounding great.

Doheny are definately on a roll in rehearsal. The band sounds as tight as ever and the new songs have come together nicely. We need a bridge on one of them, and then we are ready for Jon's lyrics. Its a good feeling to be writing and rehearsing new songs.......just wanna get out there and play!! Patience was never my strong point. I seem to have been in various studios for ages now - what with the Camp Freddy album, writing with Jon in my studio, rehearsing in the studio, and now doing the Tommy stuff, its just been studios for ever!! I love it - dont get me wrong - but I also live for being on the road. Put me on a bus and send me off for a year or two.....YES!!!

It looks like the edits are done, so I'm gonna sign off and go listen to the vocals being done. Let me think of another question for later on in the week - or maybe you guys have some ideas for silly Blog games that we can all play!! I am just happy that its building - be patient - Doheny are working their asses off and we will be out there next year playing every city we possibly can. Thats a promise.

Till tomorrow

Billy

Ahh, you're such a sweetheart. I love reading your posts.

Do you prefer touring of all the things you do as a musician?

One of these things is not like the other. Can you spot it?

Billy Morrison
Tommy Lee
Chris Chaney
Andrew McMahon
Nick Carter

Well whatever. If nothing else, Tommy Lee is diverse. Or maybe it's Nick Carter who's diverse. Or maybe Tommy's just PERverse. Wait, all of the above.

Lest we forget that Tommy and Nick are buddies now...or have we all forgotten about that punk'd episode! LOL But I can't thank you enough Holly for getting that wretched song in my head...thanks a lot! ;)

Posted by: Abby at September 28, 2004 07:07 PM

Oh yes I do remember that punk'd episode. Classic. However, I was hoping that Nick was just a passing phase in the otherwise hedonistic life of Mr. T. Lee.

Gee yeah sorry about the song. Would this be better?

~~~Hello, world, here's a song that we're singin', c'mon get happy ~~~
Nick is a hedonist? O.o
And I let my son go see those guys with his aunt when he was 9 years old! :O
only cos his aunt was into them and wanted to take him.
I'd rather take my son to a Slipknot concert than that. :D :P
Hey Billy
A lot of musicians comment on how hard it is to be out on the road. Do you ever miss all the comforts of home, family, friends, your own bed to sleep in, etc when you're out there? Or do you just take all of that with you?
(If that's the case, I can already picture the bus...lol...jammed to the rafters with stuff like X-box games and the bus itself is a special design to fit thru the drive-thru at Starbucks!)
Not a bad life...got room for the rest of us on that thing? LOL
Posted by: flamingheart at September 29, 2004 09:43 AM
yeah, good thinking flamingheart. Bus trip!!!! ;)
Billy, I can't believe I made such a faux-pas by sticking Pam Andersen in the surreal life, then you're working with Tommy Lee today. :O or was that yesterday?
Okay, see today is one of those days, you know, the little things get bigger days, my dog kicked my in the teeth. and chipped my front tooth. it hurts now. and there's a nice white mark/hole there. dentist time. The dog went to the vet yesterday, and one of his testicles is stuck in his abdomen, so he has to have an operation.
I went out to the car, and someone had nicked the passenger side mirror during the night. I've got to drive miles to a wedding on Friday, I'm not ready anyway, and now I got more to take care of. That's only a bit of the ridiculousness going on here....
Cup of tea time.
Love to all
Is there a FAQ page around here anyone please? Or shall I ask simple questions people already know except me?
Okay here goes a couple:
Billy~How did you get involved with Camp Freddy?
You mentioned your couple of years with the Cult in a post recently. How did you get together with them? Meet them originally? I know I know, people know this, I bet...
Why did you decide to live in LA and not the UK?
YAY!! A PICTURE OF MY TWO FAVORITE BILLYS!!
Thank You!
Posted by: Linda at September 29, 2004 02:19 PM
I second your comment LiNda! Nice to see the two best Billys back on stage together. Random thought (and I do have many)...I was wondering, Billy (and fellow addicted bloggers here), is there a song so beautiful/sad that it makes you want to cry???
I have several songs like that--many songs by the Smiths have produced floods of tears as well as some songs by Ours...but the number one song that was so haunting and sad for me was the Smiths "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore"...just hit too "close to home" as Morrissey says in the song...Anyone else have any suggestions? I was curious about it today.
Songs sung so beautifully that my emotions overflow into tears would be 'Nessun Dorma' by Pavarotti, and 'O Mio Babbino Caro' by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
My list of sad songs changes from week to week. This week it's 'Fall To Pieces' by VR. Last week it was 'Rexall' by DN.
Posted by: Holly at September 29, 2004 04:52 PM
The actual song to 'Fall to Pieces' didn't make me cry, but when I saw the video for it, I got a little more than emotional. It's amazing what adding imagery to the words can do.
I think a song itself doesn't necessarily have to be sad or whatever to make people cry, it's what they associate the song TO that makes them emotional.
I can think of a few songs that if I were ever to hear them live again, I would definately cry. Tears of JOY.
hey billy, i have a question, do you have a favourite song? I mean we all have favourites but is there one that you love above all others?
My favourite, from the first time I hard it in 1985, has been Kayleigh by Marillion. I can't explain why I absolutely love this song and these past 19 years nothing has come close to overtaking it in my heart. I even had to listen to it tonight for some reason. Of course I always have "at this moment" favourites, like I adore Drive Me and Watching It All Burn, and my favourite Cult song is "Bleeding Heart Graffitti", but still they can't replace Kayleigh.
Anyway, enough rambling for tonight, it's bedtime. ;)
Toodles,
tina
ack typo alert, you know I meant "heard" and not "hard" in that 2nd paragraph. I must really be tired. lol night folks!
Posted by: Tina at September 29, 2004 06:49 PM
Yeah, very cool picture!! Billy and Billy! What is it like out on the road as flamingheart asked? I've always thought it would be a lot of fun for musicians to be out on the road.
Posted by: Karen at September 30, 2004 08:36 AM
Yeah, me too Karen. Esp with "Billy and Billy" *wink*
If we play the blog game "what I want for Christmas", then that's what I want...LOL...send those two out on tour with their bands and all the bloggers get to come too..."Billy and Billy 2004"...LOL
Posted by: flamingheart at September 30, 2004 09:13 AM
hey all,
sad songs i love,
david gray's freedom,
rhcp's scar tissue,
coldplay's shiver and trouble!
i love it when lyrics in a song relate to your own sitaution so much its as if you wrote it.
love always
Add me to the 2 Billy's tour ;)
Posted by: tina at September 30, 2004 11:30 AM
Yes...we definitely need the "Tour of Two Billys"...wold be nice to throw in a lil' Ian Astbury though too...just a thought....and maybe a couple of Cult tunes...I wonder if we can contact Bands Reunited and get Jamie Stewart back to reunite...and Les Warner...what happened to him? Other bands I'd like to see reunite:
1) The Smiths (that'll happen when hell freezes over)
2) The Sisters of Mercy (w/ Wayne Hussey)
3) Generation X
4) Manic Street Preachers (with Richey James--I know he's "missing", but there is just as likelihood of finding Richey as it is the Smiths getting back together)
5)Gene Loves Jezebel (with Michael AND Jay Aston)
So why isn't VH1 trying to be these bands back together? Why oh why would they want the New Kids on the Block back?!
Anyone else want to play?
Billy--what bands would you like to see back together and touring?
Posted by: Julia at September 30, 2004 11:44 AM
I'll probably be laughed at for this, but "Green Green Grass of Home" yes by Tom Jones, makes me cry.
John Frusciante's guitar solos made me cry in June at their Cardiff show, and I was like what f*ck is going on here?
I'd be dancing all over the place like a maniac, then tears would well up in my eyes.
I'm with the Generation X thing Julia,and Sisters of Mercy.
"This Corrosion" happens to be on my list of all time faves.
Julia, I used to be way into Gene Loves Jezebel too..this is getting freaky! I went backstage and hung out with them back in the day...got pics I put in my yahoo photos just recently if you want to see them. :D
Posted by: ylais at September 30, 2004 12:29 PM
The Jam, I want The Jam back together. I never got to see them live.
Posted by: ylais at September 30, 2004 12:36 PM
Siouxsie and the Banshees (with Robert Smith in the line up)
Now I'm going to keep thinking of more and more. O.o
