COLLECTIONS

Jontile2I have to start off by telling you that Dave's new band, The Panic Channel, are fantastic! I was lucky enough to go to their secret show at The Dragonfly this week (nice turn out from the 6767 crew!) and they sounded great. The songs are killer, Steve is a perfect frontman, and Dave, as usual, is a genius on guitar. Chaney and Perkins have to be one of the best rhythm sections out there. Big up to the guys, and I look forward to great things from them. (hmmmm.......what about a show with Doheny and TPC? That seems like a cool bill.)

Yesterday, I spent the day in the studio working on the Camp Freddy record. Another guest came in and recorded a solo on one of the songs. Its getting exciting to see it slowly coming together. I cant wait for the thing to be finished (but its going to take a while - everyone is so busy with other stuff, that we have to work on it when we have a day free). And last night, I attended an event in Hollywood that had The B52's as the band - wow!! Haven't seen that band for years. They looked and sounded just like they did in the 80's. Tonight, I think I'm going to go see Siouxie at the House Of Blues. As I missed her at the Inland Invasion, I really want to try and make the show today.

Julia - Mr Idol's set at the Inland Invasion was just hit after hit. White Wedding, Eyes Without A Face, Rebel Yell, all the singles. And three songs from his new album (which I liked). And yes, he did play Sweet Sixteen.

Jay - I dont feel qualified to have a view on Ian and his activities. He was in The Cult for 20 years - I was in it for 2!! So I wish Ian happiness, I am thankful to have shared a stage with him (he is one of Rocks greatest frontmen) and hope that we get to do it again sometime.

Tina - Where did you see the Reading performance? I would LOVE to get a copy of that gig. It was a special one for me. And yes - we all had a lot of fun.

Karen and Abby - Have you ever noticed how newer albums are just 'louder' than older ones? When you play an old Pink Floyd album, for example, and then without touching the volume, you play (again, for example) Hoobastanks new record, it is MUCH louder and crisper? That is the new mastering process. It makes records sound crisper, louder and clearer. Re-Mastered albums are usually classic, seminal records that were made before they had the new techniques in mastering, and they Re-Master them using modern technology to make it 'feel' and sound better. Some of David Bowies remastered albums sound WAY better than the originals. Its very much a 'collectors' thing, or an audiophile thing.

Which leads me to Collections. Do you guys collect anything? What is it about collections that can make us so obsessed? Not everyone does it.....but I would be interested to hear about any collections that you guys have. I started thinking last night about how I collect things - I (obviously) collect guitars, mainly Les Pauls, but I have other weird obsessions too. Some of you will be aware that I collect a certain type of sneaker - the Nike Dunk High Top. It comes in hundreds of colorways (just have a look on Ebay - it'll blow your mind!!) And I also collect old Vivienne Westwood clothing (just the Seditionaries and Pirate stuff) Not to mention the DVD movie collection. What is it that makes me want to collect stuff? I didnt set out to gather a ton of shit together? It just happened! Am I weird? Am I strange? What do other people collect? Not life-changing stuff, but very interesting to me.

I may be in need of more coffee, judging by the last paragraph, so I will shut up and start my day. Have a good one folks and see you soon.

Hmm...what makes us collect stuff. Could be a slight to moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder {wink}. I'm not so much of a collector - more of a pack-rat. Well okay, maps. I like to collect antique maps.

On another note - from todays edition of Surf Santa Monica:
http://surfsantamonica.com/ssm_site/the_lookout/columns/Music/Music.htm

"Nobody walks in L.A. Nor do they in Malibu, where 1980s hit makers Missing Persons can be found tonight, reliving their glory days on the stage at the Malibu Inn. Opening acts include Flair and Stimulator. Saturday"

Huh? Stimulator? Do you know this band, Billy?

Well, the only collection I have is of Cult stuff. I used to be such an Ebay freak when it came to the Cult. I spent so much money bidding on Cult items, I used to go nuts over it. Now I have so many t-shirts (even ones that are similiar but I had to buy the other because it was slightly different). I even bought the old Pure Cult because I saw it on sale at the University I went to (they had vendors outside). So I have two Pure Cult cds...I have the white box set and the two others..I have so many CDs and bootlegs, videos, DVDs (some that people made from TV appearances or concerts). I even won an early mastered version of BG&E with The Saint sounding slightly different. I got it autographed by everyone except Ian (he wasn't around after the concert the night I brought it). I have all these Cult posters--one of my dorm rooms in college was just a complete Cult shrine. I saved all the tickets from the shows and a guitar pic from Billy Duffy and a symbol from Ian's tambourine. I even got She Sells Sanctuary as my ring tone...As many of the other Cultweb post-ers know, I spent my summer job money while in college to go to Austria and meet a good friend who is a Cult fan. From there we spent four days in London and had a Cult fan meeting with fans from all over the world. An added bonus was seeing the Sex Pistols in London. We drunkenly shouted out the words to LRM in a pub... I spent three weeks with my Austrian friend and a freind from the US traveling around Western Europe and going to Budapest and Vienna. All in the name of The Cult (and good friends). So in the process of Cult item collecting...I have collected an amazing group of friends.

Billy,

Was heavy into The Cult collecting for years, (tons of Morrison era!) but have slowed down dramatcally. The best part of the above obsession turned out to be the
"collection" of friends established, band members met (you included Billy, Tulsa and Wichita '01!) and memories made. All more important to me than the tangible shit these days..

Maybe I'm ready for a Doheny collectable phase..hint ..hint...

Rock on,
Jay

Posted by: Jay at September 23, 2004 10:48 AM

Wow Julia, that's really amazing. I know fans of Echo and The Bunnymen arange to meet up yearly in the Liverpool pub that the band used to go to regularly, and people from all over the world would meet there. I'd like to do something like that with pitchshifter fans, tried to get a meet up in London on March 28th this year, but nobody else was up for it, and even though the trains my end of the country were all canceled due to railworks so I couldn't even make it in.

I don't have any collections, really. Just as well as I'm stuglling for space with my possesions at the moment. I think if it doesn't have to be anything tangible, then I collect experiences. I know that if I could afford to I'd spend all my life just travelling and taking in new places and cultures.

Question for Billy - you thought about puddle hopping to come to a pitchshifter show in a couple of weeks? That would be awesome - I'd buy you a drink while we enjoyed the show! :)

Collecting stuff... other than dust?
Well i know this is going to sound lame but I collect Dave Navarro memorablia. I have all of his singles and imports and even a real copy of rhimorse. I have been searching for years for one of the pretest copies of DTTAH but never found one.

I also in a very small way collect guitars... Being a broke ass college kid I only have 4 but someday I want an entire room full of them.

PLEASE PLEASE Do a tour with TPC. I would love to see both of you guys come out here to denver. IT WOULD KICK SO MUCH ASS!

Yes I am that crazy insane fan who would be in the front row screaming and getting crushed again the front gate.

Much love.. glad all is well with you.

Thanks for the insight on remastered cd's.
I have a few collections, my biggest collection is my music collection. Last I counted, I have about six hundred cd's. I have about two hundred cassettes, most of which have been replaced by cd's. I have at least a two hundred vinyl albums, I have 12" vinyl, and 7" vinyl. I have a lot of The Cult in my collection. One of the most rare pieces I have would be a Cheap Trick album, it's a about a 9" (that's not a typo, it's an odd size). I have a lot of picture albums, and colored vinyl too. Along with my music collection I collect guitar picks, I don't know why, I don't even own a guitar, but I collect them. I collect band/concert t-shirts, I don't wear most of them because most of them are black, and black isn't a good color for me to wear. The other thing I collect is Garfield stuff. Quite the combination of things to collect, huh? Music, guitar picks, t-shirts, and Garfield.

Have a good day!

hiya gang, well I don't really collect anything but I seem to be losing a fighting battle with books. I guess I subconsciously collect them as I LOVE to read, HAVE to read and my apartment is overflowing almost, but I can't stop. lol

Posted by: Tina at September 23, 2004 02:35 PM

OMG! LOL! Obsessive Compulsive? (raises hand) Right here!

Collecting...The obvious one is my Cult collection. Vinyl, cd's, t-shirts, posters, etc. We all know what a crutch Ebay can be. I have tried lately to not log on there...it's too hard. Then of course, I can't leave it at just The Cult, when there's all that extended family. That's where bands like Doheny, Camp Freddy, Cardboard Vampyres, Velvet Revolver etc come in. Very expensive hobby...

I have a rather extensive Coca-Cola collection. It started about 15 years ago when I was in Europe and brought a mini-can that was promoting the Italian World Cup home with me. Snowball effect...I have boxes and boxes of stuff now. Most of it is stuff people have bought for me. I'm easy to buy for at Christmas. Lots of it is REALLY cool, and even though I don't collect it as hard-core as I used to, I can't part with it.

I am a TOTAL packrat. I don't know if it's my extreme talent at procrastination, but I have a really hard time throwing things away. Do I still need my Grade 10 science text book? Probably not, but it's in my garage nonetheless.

Posted by: flamingheart at September 23, 2004 03:12 PM

Hmmm... I don't know that I collect things per se. I am a voracious reader, and I have a lot of books. I have a difficult time letting them go, especially the really good ones, because I might want to read them again. I acquired that habit honestly though. When I was a kid and we were moving to another state, the movers started counting the boxes of books my parents had, because they had so many. Turns out they had 150 boxes of books. BOXES of books, mind you, not books.

I also collect other people's artwork. I have some really nice pieces I bought from fellow students. Well worth the investment. One of my favorites is by a friend named Casey McKee - www.caseymckee.com

Posted by: Suzanne at September 23, 2004 03:43 PM

well, i'm an elitist bitch vinyl collector. i started when i was about 8 (and cds were already the popular format), mostly as a way of getting older albums cheaply. eventually it just got out-of-hand. now i've got about 200 records, my favourites of which are the barbarella soundtrack, the listzomania soundtrack, and a mint first pressing of the concert for bangladesh. and i won't buy an album on cd if it was originally released before cds.

and about two years ago, i compulsively bought every piece of bruce lee memorobilia i saw. i even made a trip to his gravesite in seattle.

i also collect shoes, but that's just a girl thing.

Posted by: acacia at September 23, 2004 04:25 PM

Had to laugh at Karen's guitar pick thing... My purse is full of them..someday I 'spose they'll be strung into a necklace.
What is it about The Cult that makes you horde anything remotely related to the band?
Vinyl, graphics, clothes, gotta have it all!! Ebay is getting to be a difficult source ..we are all fighting each other..lol
Other random collections ..monkeys (go figure), penguins, pelicans and Joseph Campbell books.

Posted by: Electric Mayhem at September 23, 2004 07:53 PM

Hmmmmm....collections....well, I have a ton of "eeyore"stuff because people used to buy it for me all the time...that thing of mentioning you like something...But what I personally seek out is traincases. Mostly from the 1950s-1970s. I don't have a massive collection because I try to find great pieces which usually end up high priced plus shipping since they are so heavy. I do try to buy them though because the damn "shabby chic" people are buying the really nice ones and painting all over them...ugh...sorry to rant lol! I think if you want to paint on one...buy ones that are already a bit beat up and be creative...that's what I did!

Anyway...wow, I sure did go on and on! I'm tired of collecting things now, because there is nowhere to put it all, and whats the point of having stuff all in storage. My traincases and my boyfriend's knife/sword/weapon collection can be displayed fairly easily...as well as a few key music memerobilia pieces that we have.

Posted by: Abby at September 23, 2004 08:11 PM

I don't know what it is about The Cult that makes us horde anything Cult related, I definitely can relate to that. I had to quit Ebay after I spent $80.00 on a gold vinyl by The Cult. I don't spend too much time on there anymore. :-)

Posted by: Karen at September 23, 2004 08:13 PM

UGH you!!!! I've been "clean" for so long...and now I've just found myself back on ebay bidding on another one!!!

examples of the aformentioned "crime" of painting these beauties...

...why!!!!!

well...again I rant...but I really do blame you Billy for my "relapse" here!

Posted by: Abby at September 23, 2004 08:31 PM

I have to agree with Julia's comments but my collection is for pitchshifter memorabilia [makes a change from Cult stuff I suppose]. Anyway my obsession began years ago. I had to have every release pitchshifter had. Some would say be careful what you wish for but I can honestly say I feel at peace now that I've achieved that goal.

You can check out part of my collection here: http://www.dwez.freeserve.co.uk/superfan.html

Meanwhile if you really want to understand obsessions and collecting check out these books:

'Are you Dave Gorman?' - Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace
'Dave Gorman's Googlewhack adventure' - Dave Gorman
'Join me' - Danny Wallace

All very funny and will help you come to terms with being a maladjusted freak like they did for me!

I did collect records. But I sold loads of them and I am talking about 200 plus when my son was born, and I needed cash. Then I had to stop myself from going anywhere near record shops, okay by then it was CDs. But if I went in a music shop I was doomed. I'd leave with all kinds of new music, and go mad trying to find "underground" or "alternative" stuff, then wonder where my money went. I'd buy alternative music I hadn't even heard before to just to hear new music.
:D

Billy,

Since the CF gig Saturday is a private affair, how 'bout throwing some pre show guest and set list love our way?

Have fun at the gig, Courtney should be entertaining..

Thanks,
Jay

I'm with Jay. I'm so tempted to "visit" my friends in oc just to convince them to stop by the HOB to check out the situation, but I'm just gunna hafta wait for the show at the wiltern...

OK so my BIGGEST obsession is probably the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans... but the thing is they're not out there so i buy all these other mediocre pairs to fill this empty void but yet am never satisfied because I feel like i never own the perfect cut or color. It pretty much sucks. I wonder if any of the other girls can sympathize... other stuff i buy a lot are band t's(though i've had a couple of unfortunate incidences where i've been dogged on the street for wearing certain ones, always by adolescent punk girls... and one time i was wearing a sex pistols shirt too. i am still unable to fathom the irony in that). i'm already the proud owner of a doheny tee though! Lately I've also been buying a lot of books on rock history. i have a stack of about 7 waiting for me on my desk. If you want some recommendations just give me a couple more weeks.
